National Service Scheme is a Student – centered programme and it is complementary to education. It is a noble experiment in academic extension. It inculcates the spirit of voluntary work among Students and teachers through sustained community interaction. It brings our academic institutions closer to the society. It is a link between the campus and community, the college and village, knowledge and action. The overall aim of NSS is the Personality Development of Students through community service. It gives an extension dimension to Higher Education system and orients the Student youth to community service.
National Service Scheme, popularly known as NSS, was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation. Starting with an enrolment of 40000 Students in 37 Universities covering all states, the coverage of NSS Students increased to about 26.6 lakhs (2006-07) in 198 Universities, 9117 colleges,1196 Technical Institutions, 7542 Plus Two Schools and 41 Plus Two Vocational Higher Secondary Directorates. During its 39 years of fruitful existence more than 2.7crore Students have so far benefited from this largest Student-volunteer ship programme in the world.
Aim and Objective
AIM :
Personality Development of Students through community service is the aim of NSS.
OBJECTIVES :
The broad objectives of NSS are to :-
Understand the community in which they work;
Understand themselves in relation to their community;
Identify the needs and problems of the community and involve them in problem solving process;
Develop among themselves a sense of social and civic responsibility;
Utilize their knowledge in finding practical solution to individual and community problems;
Develop competence required for group-living and sharing of responsibilities;
Gain skills in mobilizing community participation;
Acquire leadership qualities and democratic attitude;
Develop capacity to meet emergencies and natural disaster and Practice national integration and social harmony.
NSS BADGE :
The NSS symbol is embossed on the NSS badge. The NSS volunteers wear it while undertaking any programme of community service. The Konark wheel in the symbol has eight bars which represent the 24 hours of the day. The Red colour in the badge indicates that the NSS volunteers are full of blood. i.e. lively, active energetic and full of high spirit. The Navy Blue colour indicates the cosmos of which the NSS is a tiny part, ready to contribute its share for the welfare of mankind.
NSS LOGO :
The symbol of the NSS is based on the ‘Rath’ wheel of the Konark Sun Temple situated in Orissa. These giant wheels of the Sun Temple portray the cycle of creation, preservation and release, and signify the movement in life across time and space. It stands for community as well as change and implies the continuous striving of National Service Scheme for social transformation, upliftment, and Development.
NSS DAY :
NSS was formally launched on 24th September, 1969, the birth centenary year of the Father of the Nation. 24 September is celebrated every year as NSS Day with appropriate programmes & activities.
NSS MOTTO :
The motto of NSS is ‘NOT Me But You’. This reflects the essence of democratic living and upholds the need for selfless service and appreciation of the other person’s point of view and also to show consideration for fellow human beings.

Our College NSS
In 1977, the first unit of NSS was formed in our college with Prof. N Ranganatha Nadar, Professor of History as the first Programme Officer. Followed by, Prof. Thangavel, Professor of Tamil, Dr T Rajendran, Professor of Chemistry, Dr B Ramamoorthy, Associate Professor of English, V Parthasarathy, Associate Professor of Zoology, and Dr N Venkata Subbu, Associate Professor of English worked as Programme Officers of the below said units. Now they have discharged their duties to the following Programmer Officers.

Our NSS volunteers in Unit Number 75, 76, 77 and 78 have done remarkable service under the guidance of Thiru V Parthasarathy, Dr N Venkatasubbu, Thiru G Sanjeevi and Thiru N S Lskhmikanthan. There were more than 400 NSS volunteers at our college.
Special Camping
The NSS units 75 and 76 jointly conducted a ten days special camp at Nedunkulam from 07.05.2005 to 16.05.2005 covering the activities such as sanitation and health awareness, watershed management, planting the saplings etc.
The NSS units 77 and 78 conducted together a ten days special camp at Karuppatti from 28.04.2005 to 07.05.2005 covering the features of activities such as general and eye camps, AIDS awareness, planning the saplings, medical plants etc.
All the four units conducted a one day special camp individually on various occasions and did various activities. The volunteers rendered their service for campus cleanliness and function arrangements.
Participation in programmes
Prof. N S Lakshmikanthan attended the orientation course from 3.08.2005 to 12.08.2005 at Avinashilingam Deemed University, Coimbatore.
Seven volunteers attended the peer team volunteer training camps at Madurai conducted by the Tamil AIDS Control board.
Two volunteers Mr P Sivagurunathan, II B.Sc Botany and Mr Ananda Bharathi, II B.Sc Computer Science, attended the one week peer state level training camp at Kanyakumari from 23rd February 2006 to 1st march 2006.
Thiru V Parthasarathy, Programme Officer, Unit No. 75 attended a one day seminar on “Integration of Rivers” jointly organized by NSS and Gandhi & Ramalinga Philosophy, Madurai Kamaraj University.
Celebration
NSS day was celecrated on 25th August 2005, Prof. S Raju, Coordinator, Madurai Kamaraj University was the Chief Guest of the function.
Others
In Arulmigu Thiruvedakanathar Temple, a new “Nanthavanam” was established by the volunteers of unit no. 76.
2006-07
In this year, the permission was granted by Programme Coordinator Prof. S Raju, a new unit No. 199 was started. Thiru Muthupandi was the Programme Officer of this Unit.
Special Camp
The NSS units 76 & 77 jointly conducted a ten days special camp at Thenur from 27.05.2006 to 30.05.2006 covering activities such as sanitation, health awareness, watershed management and planting the sapling. etc.
The NSS unit 75 & 78 conducted together a ten days special camp at Melakkal from 28.04.2006 to 07.05.2006 covering the features of activities such as general eye camp, AIDS awareness and planting the sapling and medicinal plants. etc.
One Day Camp
These four units conducted one day special camp individually on various occasions doing various activities. They rendered their service in campus cleanliness and function arrangements.
In addition to their regular activities these five NSS units conducted one special camp at the local temple and public places of the near by villages.
Programmes Participated
This year the Students of NSS unit 75 rendered their service during the function of Tenth Anniversary of DHAN Foundation, held at Lakshmi Sundaram Hall, Madurai, on 02.10.2006.
Further, 30 NSS volunteers participated in the Gandhi Jayanthi Celebration at Gandhi Peace Foundation, Madurai.
Others
All the four units’ volunteers dedicatively rendered their service in crowd controlling and other activities during the visit and at the function of her holiness Matha Amirthananda Mayi at Madurai on 02.02.2007. This service was very commendable and price worthy.
2007 - 08
Special camp
The NSS Units 76, 77 & 199 jointly organized a ten days special camp at Thodanari, near Samayanallur from 28.04.2007 to 07.05.2007 covering the activities in the field of public sanitation, health awareness, watershed management and planting the saplings and so on.
The Units 75 & 78 jointly organized a ten days special camp at Mullipallam from 07.05.2007 to 16.05.2007 covering various activities in the field of General eye camp, AIDS awareness and planting the sapling and medicinal plants. etc.
One day Camp
These five units conducted one day special camps individually on various occasions doing enormous activities. They rendered their service in campus cleanliness and functions arrangement in college and the near by villages.
In addition to their regular activities these five NSS units conducted one day special programmes undertaking various activities in the public places and the local temples in near by villages.
2008-09
This year our NSS volunteers in unit Numbers 75,76,77,78 and 199 had a huge contingent of 450 volunteers.
In addition to their regular activities, such as campus cleaning, creating environmental awareness, Health awareness, blood donation, dining hall cleaning etc. All the unit members arrange and attend one-day special camps cleanliness, further nearly 200 volunteers went to Madurai to take part in the tobacco control, Rally on 25th August.
To facilitate Madha Amirthanandamayi’s visit to Madurai, the NSS volunteers rendered their tremendous service in cleaning the Madam, crowd control, food supply, and other areas nearly for four days from 23rd January to 26th January 2009.
This year their selfless service and involvement in conducting our College Sports Day and Vivekananda Jyanti Day celebrations in a splendid way is worth praising mentioning. Their help is much sought even for our College Day and Convocation Day celebrations. The service by Our NSS volunteers is really ever continuing.
2009-10
Our NSS volunteers in unit members 75,76,77,78 and 199 a huge contingent of 450 volunteers have been rendering a very remarkable service in and around our institution.
This year NSS units 75,77 and 78 conducted the 7 day Special Camp at Ayyappanayakkanpatti near Sholavandan and the NSS units 76 and 199 conducted the 7 day Special Camp at Karupatti near Sholavandan in April and May 2009.
As the academic activities commence as usual in every June, the NSS activities get kick started vigorously. In addition to their regular activities such as campus cleaning, creating environmental awareness, Health awareness, blood donation, dining hall cleaning etc. all the NSS units arrange and conduct one day Special Camps on Sundays and Holidays.
The NSS boys rendered their selfless service and showed involvement in the conduct of Sports Day and Vivekananda Jayanthi Day functions. Their active involvement and service in the Science Exhibition is worth praising. They keep on their service in all the functions of our institution.
2010-11
Our NSS volunteers in units 75,76,77,78 and 199 a huge contingent of 480 volunteers have been rendering a very remarkable service in and around our institution.
This year NSS units 75,76 and 199 jointly conducted the 7 day Special Camp at Irumbadi near Sholavandan and the NSS units 77 and 78 conducted the 7 day Special Camp at Mannadimangalam near Sholavandan in April and May 2010.

Our NSS volunteers in unit numbers 75,76,77,78 and 199, a huge contingent of 445 volunteers rendered a very remarkable service in and around our institution. This year NSS units 75, 76 and 199 conducted the Seven Day Special Camp at Kamatchipuram from 14th to 21st May 2011 and the NSS units 77 and 78 conducted the Seven Day Special Camp at Mannadimangalam near Sholavandan from 22nd to 28th May 2011.
Second Year Student Mr. T.Rengadurai participated in the National Integration Camp on the theme ‘Youth for sustainable Development jointly organized by the N.S.S. Regional Centre, Chennai and NSS Cell of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University Tirunelveli held at Vivekananda College, Kanyakumarai from 4th to 10th June 2011.
Prof. R. Muthupandi and Prof. B. Servaramuthu attended an orientation programme for NSS programme officers from 30-01-2012 to 04-02-2012 (6 Days) conducted by NSS training centre of Avinasilingam University, Coimbatore.
In addition to their regular activities such as campus cleaning, creating environmental awarness, Health awarness, blood donation, etc., all the NSS units arrange and conduct one day special campus on Sundays and Holidays to clean the temples, Railway Station, Water tank and Staff Quarters.
